FK "Getting Happy"
I apologise for swearing, but really. F&#k it.
I really urge you to keep reading because this is important.
If you are attaching yourself to feeling happy or getting happy, let go of it now. You are set up to fail.
Because no such thing exists.
Now, this is not all doom and gloom as it may sound. Hear me out...
We are conditioned in the Western world to be "happy". Find happiness. Get happy. Like it's this permanent, tangible thing that we can work towards. And if we're not happy all the time, then something must be wrong with us. So we spend energy on worrying about why we aren't happy all the time and why we feel negative emotions. What's wrong with me? Why am I feeling like this? Something must be wrong with me.
Whoa whoa whoa. Let's go back to the initial emotion. Because that's exactly what happiness is; an emotion. It sits beside other emotions like sadness, anger and anxiety.
But you never strive to be sad do you? So what's the deal?
We are conditioned to believe that negative emotions are bad. That they are evil.
This forces us to attach ourselves to how we're feeling. To analyse. To judge. To force. To over think. To suppress. To pretend. To lie to others but even worse, ourselves. To think positively. To fake it.
They key is folks, non attachment. A core principle on which the entire system of Yoga rests.
Vairagya (non-attachment) : learning to let go of the many attachments, aversions, fears, and false identities that are clouding the true Self.
Attachment causes suffering. And we are taught to attach ourselves to this goal of 'happiness'.
Happiness isn't a goal, it's a state of being.
With this is mind, next time you notice the mind obsessing over why you feel shit, let it be. It's just a feeling. That's all it is.
